Making WordPress fast

LiteSpeed Cache, images, and the habits that keep a site quick.

On this page

1. Turn on LiteSpeed Cache

IDX hosting runs LiteSpeed, and its WordPress plugin is the single biggest speed gain.

  1. Plugins → Add New, search for LiteSpeed Cache, install and activate it.
  2. Caching is on with safe defaults. Visit your site in a private window to see the difference.
  3. Under LiteSpeed Cache → Page Optimization, try CSS and JS minification, checking your site after each change.
  4. Under Image Optimization, optimise your images to WebP.

2. Lighter images

Resize images to the size they're shown at before uploading. A 4000-pixel photo shown 800 pixels wide wastes most of its weight.

3. Fewer, better plugins

Every plugin adds code to each page. Delete plugins you don't use, and avoid ones that duplicate each other (two SEO plugins, two cache plugins).

4. A good theme

Lightweight themes load much faster than heavy all-in-one themes.

5. Current PHP

Use a current PHP version. See Changing the PHP version.
