Changing your WordPress site's domain

Move WordPress to a new address without broken links.

  1. Back up the site first.
  2. Add the new domain to your hosting and point it there (see Hosting more than one website).
  3. In Settings → General, change both addresses to the new domain and save. You'll be logged out; log in at the new address.
  4. Replace the old domain inside your content with a plugin such as Better Search Replace: search https://old-domain.com, replace with https://new-domain.com, across all tables. Run it as a dry run first.
  5. Add a 301 redirect from the old domain to the new one so visitors and search rankings follow. See Redirecting a page or domain.
