File permissions explained
What 644 and 755 mean, and how to fix wrong permissions.
Permissions decide who can read, write or run a file.
| Item | Correct permission |
|---|---|
| Folders | 755 |
| Files | 644 |
wp-config.php and other secret config files | 600 or 640 |
Never use `777`. It lets anyone on the server write to the file and is a common way sites get hacked.
Changing permissions
In File Manager, right-click a file or folder and choose Change Permissions, or select several and use the Permissions button.
