A monthly website maintenance plan that prevents emergencies

Websites rarely break suddenly; they decay. Thirty minutes a month of the right checks keeps yours fast, secure and working.

Most website emergencies we see were avoidable: an expired domain, a certificate that did not renew, a plugin left unpatched for a year, a full disk. A short routine catches them early.

Every week

  • Check that the site loads and the contact form sends.
  • Glance at uptime alerts and any security notifications.

Every month

  1. Back up, then update the CMS, themes and plugins. Test key pages afterwards.
  2. Check backups exist and that the latest one is recent.
  3. Review disk usage and mailbox sizes.
  4. Test forms and checkout end to end.
  5. Look at Search Console for new errors and changes in traffic.
  6. Check speed of the home page and a key landing page.

Every quarter

  • Restore a backup to a test location to prove it works.
  • Remove unused plugins, themes, users and old test sites.
  • Review who has admin access to the website, hosting and domain.
  • Check that the PHP version and server software are still supported.

Every year

  • Confirm domain renewal dates and payment methods.
  • Review your privacy policy, terms and cookie notice.
  • Reconsider hosting resources against your traffic.

Write it down

Keep a simple log of what was done and when. When something goes wrong, it shows what changed recently.
