How to start a website for an NGO or charity

Donors and partners want transparency and an easy way to help. A clear website on your own domain builds that trust.

For non-profits, the website does three jobs: explain the cause, prove the impact and make it easy to donate or volunteer.

What to include

  • Mission and programmes, in plain words.
  • Impact: numbers, stories and photos from the field.
  • Transparency: registration details, board, reports and financial summaries.
  • Ways to help: donate, volunteer, partner or sponsor.
  • News and campaigns.

Step 1: domain

Your organisation's name as a domain. Register it at IDX; a .org or .org.eg signals a non-profit, and the Egyptian ending has its own registration requirements.

Step 2: hosting

Most charity sites run well on IDX shared hosting. Campaign sites that expect traffic peaks, or donation platforms, fit better on web hosting.

Step 3: email for staff and volunteers

Official addresses for staff, and mailing lists for volunteers and board members, with business email.

Step 4: build

Clear calls to action on every page, a simple donation process through a trusted payment gateway, and fast, accessible pages.

Step 5: report back

Share regular updates on what donations achieved. Trust is built after the donation, not only before it.
