Starting a SaaS product: domains, servers and the setup that scales

A software-as-a-service product needs more than a website: an app domain, reliable servers, transactional email and backups from day one.

Launching a SaaS product means customers depend on your software every day. The infrastructure decisions you make early are hard to change later, so make them deliberately.

Domains

  • yourproduct.com for the marketing site.
  • app.yourproduct.com for the application.
  • Optional subdomains for the API, status page and documentation.

Register your product domain at IDX, and consider registering common misspellings.

Servers

Start with one or two cloud VPS servers: one for the application, one for the database as you grow. You get guaranteed resources, full root access and snapshots. When load justifies it, add application servers behind a load balancer, or move the database to a dedicated server.

File storage

Customer uploads belong on object storage, so application servers stay stateless and easy to replace.

Email

Separate the two kinds of email: team mailboxes on business email, and transactional email (sign-ups, resets, notifications) through a sending service authenticated for your domain.

From day one

  • Automated daily backups stored off the server, with restore tests.
  • Staging and production environments.
  • Monitoring and alerts on the application, not just the server.
  • HTTPS everywhere and secrets kept out of your code.

Plan for growth

Keep the application stateless, the database on fast storage, and deployments automated. Read server capacity planning for sizing.
