Switching to IDX without downtime

Lower the TTL, test on IDX first, then switch DNS.

  1. A day before: lower the TTL of your domain's records to 300 seconds at your current DNS provider.
  2. Copy the site to IDX and test it there before switching. Ask support for a temporary address, or test with your computer's hosts file.
  3. Freeze changes on the old site during the switch (no new orders or posts), or plan to copy the latest data across.
  4. Switch: update the A records, or the nameservers, to IDX.
  5. Watch: check with the DNS checker as the new address spreads, and keep the old hosting running for a few days.
  6. Afterwards, raise the TTL again.
