Signs it is time to move from a VPS to a dedicated server

A VPS covers most needs, until it does not. Here are the signals that a dedicated server will serve you better, and what to check before moving.

A good VPS can carry a surprising amount of traffic. But some workloads grow into a point where a whole physical machine is simply the better fit.

Signals that you are outgrowing a VPS

  • You keep buying the largest plan and still hit CPU or memory limits at peak times.
  • Your database is the bottleneck, with heavy disk activity that needs local, high-performance storage.
  • You need very large storage on fast drives, or a specific RAID layout.
  • Compliance or contracts require single-tenant hardware, where no other customer shares the machine.
  • You run your own virtualisation, splitting one powerful machine into many VMs for your teams or customers.
  • Consistent performance matters more than flexibility, for example for latency-sensitive applications.

What you gain

All of the CPU cores, memory and disk bandwidth are yours. You choose the processor, memory size, drives and network port, and you can install any operating system or hypervisor.

What you give up

  • Instant resizing: adding resources means changing hardware.
  • Built-in redundancy: a single server is a single point of failure, so plan backups, spare capacity or a second server.
  • Simplicity: hardware monitoring and RAID health become your concern, unless the server is managed.

Before you move

  1. Measure your current usage at peak, so you size the new server properly.
  2. Decide on storage layout and backups.
  3. Plan the migration and a rollback.

Our guides on choosing server processors and ECC memory help with the hardware choices.

At IDX

IDX dedicated servers are built to your specification: processor, memory, NVMe or HDD storage and network uplink, with IPMI access and DDoS protection options, in several locations. Request a server and our engineers will help you size it.
