The first time you open cPanel, the number of icons can be overwhelming. In practice, most website owners use the same ten tools again and again.
Files and websites
- File Manager: browse, upload and edit your site's files in the browser. Your main site lives in public_html.
- Domains: add another domain or a subdomain to the same account.
- WordPress Toolkit or installer: install WordPress and other applications in a few clicks. Our guide shows how to install WordPress.
- Email Accounts: create mailboxes on your domain, set their storage and open webmail.
- Forwarders: send mail for one address to another inbox.
- Email Deliverability: check that SPF and DKIM are set up so your messages are trusted.
Databases
- MySQL Databases: create databases and users for applications.
- phpMyAdmin: browse and edit tables directly; useful, but take a backup before changing anything.
Security and maintenance
- SSL/TLS Status: see which domains have a certificate and request free ones.
- Backup: download a copy of your files, databases and email settings.
Habits that keep a site healthy
- Take a backup before updates or big changes.
- Delete old test sites and unused plugins; they are common entry points for attackers.
- Check disk usage now and then, especially if mailboxes are large.
