On shared and web hosting, many websites usually share one IP address. The server knows which site to show from the domain name in each request. People sometimes worry that this hurts security or SEO. In most cases, it does not.
Myths
- "I need my own IP for SSL." Not any more. Modern browsers support SNI, which lets many certificates share one address.
- "Shared IPs hurt rankings." Search engines judge your site's content and links, not whether the address is shared.
When a dedicated IP helps
- Allowlisting: a partner, bank or payment gateway only accepts connections from a fixed address you control.
- Your own mail reputation: if you send significant volumes of transactional email from your own server, a dedicated IP means your reputation is yours alone.
- Direct access by IP: some software, devices or legacy systems need to reach the server by address.
- Running your own services: VPN endpoints, game servers or applications on custom ports.
VPS and dedicated servers
Every VPS and dedicated server comes with its own public IPv4 address, and often IPv6. If you are already considering one for performance or control, the dedicated address comes with it.
IPv4 is scarce
Public IPv4 addresses have run out at the registries, which makes extra addresses a limited resource. Read why IPv6 matters for your business.
At IDX
