Hosting offers are full of numbers: storage, bandwidth, databases, email accounts. For a typical company website, a handful of them decide whether the site feels fast and stays online.
Start with what the site does
- Brochure site (a few pages, a contact form): almost any entry plan is enough.
- Blog or news site: needs more storage over time for images, and good caching.
- Online store: needs more CPU and memory for checkout, product search and admin work, plus reliable backups.
- Custom application: may be better on a VPS, where you control the software.
The numbers that matter
- CPU and memory limits: these decide how many visitors can be served at once. On shared hosting they are set per account.
- Storage type: NVMe drives are much faster than older disks for databases and many small files.
- Backups: how often, how long they are kept, and how you restore.
- Email limits: if you will send email from the hosting, check the hourly sending limit.
The numbers that matter less
"Unlimited" bandwidth or storage is rarely the bottleneck for a small business site. A site with thousands of monthly visitors uses a small fraction of what most plans include.
Shared, web or VPS?
Shared hosting suits most small sites and is the most affordable. Web hosting plans give more resources and room to grow on the same easy control panel. When you need root access, custom software or guaranteed resources, a VPS is the next step. Our article on shared hosting, VPS or dedicated explains when to move up.
Do not forget the domain and email
Your website, domain and email work together. Keeping them with one provider makes DNS changes, renewals and support simpler.
