Shared hosting, VPS or dedicated server: how to choose, and when to move up

Each step up gives you more control, more isolation and more responsibility. The right choice depends on your traffic, your software and who will run the server.

The three main hosting models sit on a ladder. Each rung costs more and gives you more, and there is no prize for climbing higher than you need.

Shared hosting

Your site runs on a server alongside other customers' sites, managed by the provider through a control panel.

  • Best for: business websites, blogs, small online stores, email for a domain.
  • You manage: your site's files, databases, email accounts.
  • The provider manages: the server, its security, its software stack.
  • Limits: fixed resources, no root access, no custom server software.

VPS (virtual private server)

A virtual machine with guaranteed CPU, memory and storage, and full root or administrator access.

  • Best for: growing applications, custom software stacks, several sites with different needs, development and staging environments.
  • You manage: the operating system and everything on it, unless you buy a managed service.
  • Limits: you share the physical host with other virtual machines, though your resources are reserved.

Dedicated server

A whole physical server for you alone.

  • Best for: databases with heavy input/output, high-traffic platforms, compliance requirements that call for single-tenant hardware, specialised hardware needs.
  • You manage: everything above the hardware, unless managed.
  • Strengths: no neighbours, predictable performance, full control of hardware choices such as processors, ECC memory, drive types and RAID.

Signs it is time to move up

  • Your site slows down at peak times and caching no longer helps.
  • You need software or settings shared hosting does not allow.
  • Your application needs guaranteed resources rather than a fair share.
  • A customer, auditor or regulator asks for isolation your current setup cannot provide.

The question people forget: who will run it?

A VPS or dedicated server needs patching, monitoring, backups and security. If nobody on your team has the time or skills, budget for a managed service, or stay on shared hosting a little longer.
