Odoo Community Edition is an open-source suite of business applications: CRM, sales, purchasing, inventory, accounting, manufacturing, website and more. Because it runs so much of a business, a slow or unavailable Odoo stops work across the company.
How Odoo uses resources
- Workers: Odoo serves requests with worker processes. More workers handle more simultaneous users, and each one uses memory.
- PostgreSQL: the database does much of the heavy lifting. It benefits from fast storage and plenty of memory for caching.
- Scheduled jobs: background tasks for emails, reports and integrations run alongside users and need capacity too.
Sizing in practice
- Start from concurrent users, not total users. Twenty staff may only have a handful active at any moment.
- Leave memory for PostgreSQL's cache; a database that fits in memory is far faster.
- Put the database on SSD or NVMe storage.
- Heavy reports, large imports and many integrations need more than the user count suggests.
- Plan for growth in data: a few years of transactions and attachments add up.
Running it well
- Keep Odoo and its modules on a supported version and test upgrades on a copy before applying them.
- Back up both the database and the filestore (attachments). One without the other is not a complete backup.
- Use a reverse proxy with TLS in front of Odoo.
- Restrict database manager access, which is exposed by default and should not be public.
- Monitor workers, memory and slow queries.
- Review third-party modules carefully; a poorly written module is the most common cause of performance problems.
