NOC vs SOC: what each team does, and why serious infrastructure needs both

A network operations centre keeps systems running; a security operations centre keeps attackers out. They watch different signals, but the best results come when they work together.

Both names describe a team that watches your infrastructure, often around the clock. The difference is what they are watching for.

The network operations centre (NOC)

The NOC is responsible for availability and performance. Its questions are: is everything up, and is it fast enough?

  • Monitors servers, networks, storage and applications.
  • Responds to outages, degraded performance and capacity alerts.
  • Handles routine operations: patch windows, backups, hardware replacement, changes.
  • Measures success in uptime, response time and time to restore.

The security operations centre (SOC)

The SOC is responsible for detecting and responding to threats. Its questions are: is someone attacking us, and have they got in?

  • Collects and analyses security logs and alerts.
  • Investigates suspicious activity: unusual logins, malware, data leaving the network.
  • Leads incident response when an attack is confirmed.
  • Tracks vulnerabilities and hardening.
  • Measures success in time to detect and time to contain.

Where they overlap

Many incidents look like an operations problem at first. A server running at full CPU could be a traffic spike or a cryptominer. A flood of connections could be a successful campaign or a DDoS attack. When the NOC and SOC share information and escalation paths, these incidents are recognised and handled faster.

Do you need both?

If your systems are business-critical, regulated or customer-facing, you need both functions. The question is whether to build them in-house, which means 24/7 shifts, tooling and specialist staff, or to work with a provider who already has them.

How IDX helps

IDX offers NOC and SOC services scoped to your needs: monitoring, incident response, hardening and reporting, for infrastructure we host and, where agreed, for your own. Talk to our team about what you need watched and how quickly you need a response.
