A VPS or a hyperscale cloud? Comparing costs honestly

Big cloud platforms are powerful, but their bills surprise many small teams. Here is how to compare them with a fixed-price VPS.

Large cloud platforms offer hundreds of services and near-unlimited scale. For many small and medium businesses, though, a fixed-price VPS or dedicated server runs the same workload for a fraction of the cost.

Where hyperscale clouds shine

  • Workloads that scale up and down sharply within a day.
  • Managed services you would struggle to run yourself: global databases, machine learning platforms, serverless functions.
  • Organisations already invested in one platform's tools and skills.

Where the bill surprises people

  • Data transfer out: traffic leaving the cloud is billed per gigabyte, and popular sites or backups to elsewhere add up quickly.
  • Many small line items: storage operations, IP addresses, load balancers, snapshots and monitoring each carry a price.
  • Always-on servers: the flexible price per hour is attractive for short jobs, but a server running all month is often far cheaper on a fixed plan.
  • Currency: bills in US dollars move with exchange rates.

How to compare fairly

  1. Describe your workload: CPU, memory, storage, monthly traffic and backups.
  2. Price it on the cloud calculator, including data transfer and the extras you actually need.
  3. Price the same on VPS or dedicated plans, adding any managed services you would need.
  4. Compare the total for twelve months, not the headline hourly rate.

A balanced approach

Many teams run steady workloads, websites, databases and internal systems, on fixed-price servers, and use cloud services only where they add something unique.
